Long Term Health Care

long term health care.jpgByron Health Center’s 1st floor neighborhoods of Kennedy Crossing and Swander Lane are home to around 40 residents who require a bit more medical attention and have been approved by the Preadmission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR). All rooms on the Long Term Health Care neighborhoods are shared with a half bath, but residents have three different suite styles to choose from including 2-bed, 3-bed and 4-bed.  Different assisted bathing options are available in the several cleansing spa areas.  Meals are provided at Shirley’s Café and residents are also able to take advantage of the Always-Available menu options for each meal.  Separate, smaller dining areas are also available for those that may need extra assistance.

A dedicated Resident Engagement Specialist is available to handle the majority of social work needs while restorative aides encourage strengthening and wellness activities.  Byron Health Center does allow smoking on-campus in selected, covered outdoor areas. Residents are assessed for safety concerns dealing with smoking, but free to smoke on their own. Each resident also has an individualized care plan created for them which list goals and directives to maintain and improve activities of daily living (ADLs) and life experiences while fulfilling psycho-social, physical and mental needs. The care plans are created by an inter-disciplinary team of professionals using input form the resident and their family members, guardian or power of attorney (POA).

Healthcare Therapy Services (HTS) partner with Byron Health Center to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy. Long Term Health Care residents are free to participate in any of the events on the abundant Byron Health Center activities calendar as well as take advantage of the on-campus clinical offerings including dentistry, podiatry, ophthalmology, audiology and psychology as well as the on-campus beauty shop.

Payer source options on the Long Term Health Care neighborhoods include private pay, Medicare and Medicaid as all beds are dually certified.

Memory Care

memory careByron Health Center is the first and only facility in the area to have separate memory care neighborhoods for men and women.  The 2nd floor neighborhoods of Mauch Drive and Floridis Avenue are home to around 25 ladies.  The 3rd floor neighborhoods of Hart’s Cove and Katsanis Court are home to around 25 fellows.  All rooms on the Memory Care neighborhoods are shared with a half bath, but residents have three different suite styles to choose from including 2-bed, 3-bed and 4-bed.  Different assisted bathing options are available in the cleansing spa areas. Meals are provided in private dining rooms on each neighborhood and residents are also able to take advantage of the Always-Available menu options for each meal.  Separate, smaller dining areas are also available for those that may need extra assistance.

Individuals with various forms of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, sexual inappropriateness or who might be a wandering risk reside on the secured Memory Care neighborhoods, but are encouraged to participate in as many on-campus or off-campus activities as they can.  The Memory Care neighborhoods specialize in behavior modification and intervention pilot programs including Cognitive Re-direction Strategies, Horticulture Therapy, Music Therapy and Art Therapy.

Skilled Nursing

Byron Health Center does offer skilled nursing care in in both its Long Term Health Care and Memory Care neighborhoods which can be especially advantageous for those requiring rehab to home services yet have behavior issues or need the safety provided by secure Memory Care. Healthcare Therapy Services (HTS) partner with Byron Health Center to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy.  All beds are dually certified for Medicare and Medicaid.

Huntington’s Disease

Byron Health Center plans to dedicate its 1st floor neighborhood of Mortimer Way to the long term care needs of those with Huntington’s Disease. Training is underway to become a Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) Centers of Excellence approved long term care center. Only four of these approved centers currently exist in the United States with the closest being in Indianapolis. Byron Health Center is striving to be the fifth. By working closely with the Indiana University Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence, who provide specialized resources to our staff, Byron Health Center will work specifically with residents who are diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. Training is the key to successfully caring for the complex needs of this unique population. A partnership with the Indiana University Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence helps to continually educate our staff, ensuring they are providing exceptional care. The training will begin with hiring practices to ensure the best employees are selected. Through a multi-disciplinary approach to training, team members learn about the physiology of the disease and how to manage behaviors which may arise.

Assisted Living

041415 MP Super Hero 5837Miller’s Place is a tight-knit community of around 50 residents and provides co-ed, dorm-style assisted living on the Byron Health Center campus.  Residents have private rooms and share community restrooms and showers.  Meals are provided at Shirley’s Café in the main Byron Health Center building and Miller’s Place residents are also able to take advantage of the Always-Available menu options for each meal.

A nurse is scheduled in-house 24-hours each day and a dedicated Resident Engagement Specialist is available to handle the majority of social work needs. Miller’s Place residents are free to participate in any of the events on the abundant Byron Health Center activities calendar.  Miller’s Place also plans many outings and activities on their own including attending sporting events, trips to campgrounds or various volunteer undertakings.  Miller’s Place residents are also able to take advantage of the on-campus clinical offerings including dentistry, podiatry, ophthalmology, audiology and psychology as well as the on-campus beauty shop.
